In partnership with the Biennial of the Americas
Sunday | July 19, 2015 | 2:00 PM
Virtuosic dancers from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro fuse contemporary dance, hip-hop, samba, and capoeira in the boldly imaginative choreography of Sonia Destri Lie. Companhia Urbana de Dança is one of the most exciting new ensembles on the world stage. Destri Lie deconstructs the thrilling kinetic expressions of street dance and shapes them into theatrical tableaux. “Classic hip-hop moves are visible — the rippling of arms, the rolling on backs — yet they have been stretched and shaped into something new.” (The New York Times) Companhia Urbana de Dança elicits a sense of euphoria wherever they perform.
Companhia Urbana de Dança’s performance at the Newman Center on Sunday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. caps off a week of collaboration with the Biennial of the Americas, including co-creation of a new work with Denver’s Wonderbound, to be performed at Biennial Night at Civic Center on Friday, July 17. They will also lead several free public dance workshops, teach at Cleo Parker Robinson’s Summer Dance Intensive, and instruct professional dancers in a master class. Destri Lie will participate in a Biennial Pavilion panel discussion about art in community settings.
