Alarm Will Sound returns to Newman Center Presents after its provocative multimedia show 1969 a few years ago. AWS is one of the most creative alternative classical musical ensembles working today. Just beyond the cutting edge, this 20-member group consists of young, unstuffy musicians presenting virtuosic new compositions. Medeski Martin & Wood has been an experimental jazz and jam-band trio since 1992. This improvisation-driven group, led by keyboardist John Medeski, offers a unique, groove-oriented mix drawing from jazz, African music, funk, and hip-hop. Both AWS and MMW have performed throughout the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Biennale in Frankfurt, from Lincoln Center to the Montreaux Jazz Festival.

This performance marks the premiere of a new body of work jointly created by the two ensembles for performance at the Newman Center and at the University of Colorado.

“In the work of Alarm Will Sound, a vibrant, technically dazzling new music ensemble, listeners have grown accustomed to encountering the amazing, the amusing and, occasionally, the near-impossible.”

The New York Times

“Genre-stomping freedom is the essence of MMW. Soul-jazz is serious music in this band’s hands, while serious compositions… are presented with love, humor and joy.”
